GEM OF LIFE PROMOTION EVENT IN CHINA (HZ): MAGGIE HITS HER 40S WITH NOT EVEN A SINGLE WRINKLE
For over 20 years, in the hearts of ardent HK drama fans, Maggie Shiu has been the onscreen personification of a cool beauty in tragic love stories. Although multitudes of established artistes, most of whom are her peers, had crossed over to work in mainland productions in recent years, she has yet to venture across the border, staying remote from the entertainment industry in mainland China. Yesterday, the actress finally arrived for the first time in Hangzhou. It was only at this point we discovered this veteran widely perceived to be cool and independent is actually a golden girl with a very warm and friendly personality and exceptionally traditional in her values.
As she once again shines in her lead role in TVB’s blockbuster production Gem of Life broadcasted in end of 2008, Maggie Shiu was invited along with her co-star Kenny Wong to participate in a “Meet the Fans” session organized by WASU Hang Zhou Digital TV Pte Ltd. Just several minutes into taking her seat at the session, Shiu who is already in her mid 40s, came under the critical scrutiny of a *Gen-Y member of the audience, a girl in her 20s. Eventually, another girl admitted defeat by exclaiming: “Wow, can’t even find a single wrinkle on her face…”
When directly facing the media, Maggie Shiu was totally unlike the aloof actress with very few words to say, as alleged in earlier reports. At yesterday’s event, Maggie’s animated face was rich in expressions, from widening her starry bright eyes, knitting her brows and laughing heartily, a starking contrast from her onscreen icy image.
However, when a female fan excitedly came on stage to take a photograph with the lanky star, first clutching her tightly in an exaggerated stance and then laying her head on her shoulder, Maggie appeared slightly awkward and her expression revealed a tinge of surprise. Obviously, she is not an expert in maintaining a facade and this is consistent with her low profile personality.
Keeping a low profile is an exceptionally rare quality found in the artistes of present day, as everybody feared being forgotten by the audience overtime. But for Maggie Shiu, even during the much publicized media saga of how Gigi Leung stole her boyfriend Ekin Cheng in the past, she unwaveringly kept a low profile and never spoke a single word about the incident, let alone hard selling herself. “What is most important is for myself to feel comfortable. I am very clear in drawing the line between work and my personal time. "
Maggie Shiu further emphasised: “Perhaps if I am high profile, my fans will run away”.
*Generation Y, also known as The Millennial Generation, is a term used to describe the demographic cohort following Generation X. The generation is defined as the children of the Baby Boomer generation. It is the generation following Generation X, especially people born between 1980 to 1988. |
